At the University of Napoli Federico II, the Degree Program in Environmental and Territorial Engineering was established in the academic year1990-91, immediately after its activation pursuant to the Ministerial Decree of May 1989. It was then reorganized following the Ministerial Decrees 509/1999 and 270/2004, with the transition to a two-level curriculum.
The Master’s Degree Program in Environmental and Territorial Engineering provides specific professional knowledge in the disciplinary field of Civil and Environmental Engineering, with particular reference to the sectors of environmental protection and remediation, hydrogeological instability, and the management of renewable and low environmental impact energy. It integrates the knowledge and skills acquired with the Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental and Territorial Engineering.
The figure that the course will train is the Environmental and Territory Engineer.
Master’s graduates in Environmental and Territorial Engineering will be able to take on roles as managers in the fields of planning, implementation, management and control of environmental protection, soil protection and territorial governance interventions as well as interventions relating to energy production and safety in the workplace. A very important outlet for these graduates is the carrying out of freelance professional activities, individually or in association.
The Master’s Degree Program in Environmental and Territorial Engineering has as its educational objective the preparation of graduates who are experts in the planning, management and control of interventions and/or activities aimed at the protection and restoration of the quality of the environment, the defense of the soil and to the production and management of renewable and low environmental impact energy, as well as its application and use in urban areas.
The Master’s graduate in Environmental and Territorial Engineering will therefore be able to carry out managerial or managerial roles in public bodies (or with mixed participation), companies, consortia and agencies operating in soil protection, in the governance of transport and territory, in the integrated management of water and in the protection and restoration of the environment, or in companies operating in the sectors of technologies for environmental monitoring and systems serving water, transport and energy infrastructures as well as in the field of solid, liquid and gaseous waste treatment. The graduate will be able to work as a consultant or employee in consumer goods production companies, professional firms and engineering companies that operate in the sector of planning and design of civil networks and infrastructures, soil protection, industrial safety, environmental control and remediation, private companies operating in the construction and civil infrastructure sectors. The highly multicultural aspect of the Master’s Degree in Environmental and Territorial Engineering will allow the graduate not only to communicate with all the professional figures with whom he will find himself interacting, but also to assume the function of coordinating groups, even heterogeneous ones, of professionals operating in the sectors listed above.
Enrollment in the Master’s Degree requires possession of a Bachelor Degree, including that obtained according to the regulations prior to the Ministerial Decree. 509/1999, or a three-year university diploma or other qualification obtained abroad recognized as suitable.
For admission to the Master’s Degree course in Environmental and Territorial Engineering, specific curricular requirements and adequate personal preparation of the student are also required.
The required curricular requirements include possession of a degree in the L7 class, or possession of a number of credits (CFU) in the scientific sectors detailed in the Didactic Regulation of the study Program (https://www.iat.unina.it/qualita-della-didattica-magistrale/). B2 level knowledge of the English language is also required for all students. The absence of such a requirement still permits sub-condition enrolment, provided that a certificate attesting the English language proficiency has to be obtained by the first semester of the second year of the course. B2 level knowledge of the Italian language is required to non-Italian students applying for study courses in Italian.

The Study Programme in Environmental and Territorial Engineering has a legal duration of 2 years and it includes a traditional educational pathway, divided into 3 different curricula named “Environmental Sustainability”, “Hydrogeological Dissest” and “Energy for the Environment”. These are structured with the indication of curricular teachings aimed at deepening, respectively, the themes of environmental protection and remediation, soil protection and land management and the production and management of unconventional energy resources. Furthermore, each curriculum includes free-choice courses (aiming at gaining 18 credits) that can be distributed between the first and second years in an absolutely free manner.
It is also possible to be awarded the Double Degree in Environmental and Territorial Engineering and Mathematical Engineering, by complementing the traditional educational pathway with additional activities recognized for being awarded the Master’s Degree in Mathematical Engineering (in this case, the overall duration is 6 semesters/3 years).
The training offer is completed with the curriculum “Environmental Sustainability”, fully delivered in English.
The students enrolled in the Master’s Degree Programme in Environmental and Territorial Engineering can also be awarded the Minor “Green Technology Developer”, framed within the national project “Tecnologie per le transizioni”, activated together with the Polytechnical Schools of Bari, Milano and Torino as well as the Universities of Bologna, Padova, Palermo and Roma La Sapienza, with the auspices of the Ministry for University and Research. To this end, the educational pathway needs to be based on an individual Study Plan including 30 credits of specific training activities. The achievement of the Minor is attested by a digital certification (Open Badge) issued by the University of Napoli Federico II and its acquisition, together with the completion of a Master’s thesis of an interdisciplinary nature on a topic consistent with the chosen profile, is attested through a specific mention in the Diploma Supplement of the Master’s Degree Course.
Students have a wide selection of agreements with public and private companies and institutions, aimed at carrying out training internships outside the University. The agreements are signed by the University, on the basis of actions carried out by the University Service Center for the Coordination of Special Projects and Organizational Innovation (COINOR), the Polytechnic and Basic Sciences School, and the Department where the Study Program is offered.
The internship request can be made through a fully computerized procedure by accessing the Collabora portal at http://collabora.unina.it. Details for the procedure are available on the University website.
Within the study programme, spending periods abroad is highly encouraged.
To this end, it takes part to the ERASMUS + student mobility programs to allow students to spend a period of study or carry out an internship at a partner institution belonging to a University of the European Union. Further details are available at
https://www.unina.it/didattica/opportunita-studenti/erasmus/programma.
The Master’s Programme in Environmental and Territorial Engineering has a training pathway leading to the award of a Double Degree in Environmental and Territorial Engineering and in Engineering Ecology, pursuant to the agreement stipulated with the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy of Sofia (Bulgaria). It also has an active training course aimed at issuing a Double Degree in Environmental and Territorial Engineering and in Environmental Engineering, pursuant to the agreement stipulated with the Kyungpook National University of Daegu (South Korea). The criteria for access to the dual Degree Program, the period of teaching activities abroad and the Table of Correspondence of Training Activities are annexed to the Didactic Regulation of the Study Programme.
The Master’s Degree in Environmental and Territorial Engineering is achieved after passing a final test, consisting of the evaluation of a written report, drawn up by the student under the guidance of one or more supervisors, which focuses on training activities carried out in the field of one or more courses or internship activities.
The final test is taken by the Candidate in front of a Commission chaired by the Course Coordinator and consists of the presentation of the work carried out and the subsequent discussion with the members of the Commission. For this purpose, the student is allowed to make use of an audio-visual support, to be projected publicly, or, alternatively, to draw up a summary booklet, to be delivered in copy to each member of the Commission. At the end of the presentation, each Committee member can make comments to the candidate relating to the topic of the thesis work. The presentation lasts 15 minutes, while the discussion with the Committee member has a maximum duration of 5 minutes. The mark obtained by the Candidate is expressed in 110-tenths and is obtained by adding three scores: the first depends on the marks obtained in the exams, considering that those passed with honors are equal to 31; the second, up to a maximum of 3 points, is awarded based on the progress and regularity of one’s career; the third, up to a maximum of 5 points, is assigned by the Commission in relation to the quality of the thesis work and the candidate’s presentation ability.
The orientation activity is developed through three complementary methods:
The International Welcome desk could be reached from foreign countries by e-mail: internationalwelcomedesk@unina.it.
The tutoring of students enrolled in the Master’s Degree Course is entrusted primarily to the Course Coordinator and individual teachers, with whom students manage to have a direct relationship during teaching hours or during reception hours. The effectiveness tested for this system, in one with the maturity of the students, allowed us to verify its sufficiency.
