UPDATED GUIDE 2026/2027
Design for the Built Environment is a two-year international Master of Science taught entirely in English. The programme prepares designers to engage with the transformation of the built environment, understood as a system of relationships among spaces, uses, behaviours, and material and immaterial products. It combines design culture with technological, representational, social, economic and historical-critical knowledge within a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach.
The first year provides a common foundation. At the end of that year, students select one of two curricula. Exhibit Design addresses interior environments, temporary installations, museums, retail spaces, events and the communication of cultural and commercial content. Digital Design addresses user-centred digital products, services and systems, interface and interaction design, augmented environments and human-computer interaction.
The programme comprises 120 ECTS credits. The Study Manifesto for 2026 2027 assigns 64 ECTS credits to the common first year and 56 ECTS credits to the second year, including elective activities, a traineeship, the graduation thesis and the final examination.
Graduates are qualified to coordinate complex design processes in Exhibit Design and Digital or Interaction Design, from concept development to prototyping, testing, implementation, communication and delivery. They may work in design, architecture and communication practices; cultural institutions and public bodies; companies producing exhibition and interior components; digital product and service companies; innovation consultancies; research and development teams; marketing departments; and start-ups. They may also work as design project managers, design officers, consultants or freelance professionals.
Admission is subject to an online application and an assessment of the applicant’s previous academic record by the appointed committee. Applicants must hold a first-cycle degree in one of the eligible Italian degree classes L 03, L 04, L 07, L 09, L 17, L 21, L 23 or L 31, or another suitable Italian or overseas qualification equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree and corresponding to at least 180 ECTS credits. The committee assesses the applicant’s academic background, curriculum vitae and any relevant educational or extracurricular activities.
A minimum level of B2 English under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is required before enrolment. Where a certificate is not available, the Degree Programme may arrange an assessment before enrolment is completed. The committee may request a portfolio and curriculum vitae; these are compulsory for non-EU applicants whose previous educational system requires a more detailed assessment. The academic regulations provide for admission in either semester, subject to the relevant administrative procedures and deadlines.

Additional study plan information
Teaching activities are measured in ECTS credits; each credit corresponds to 25 hours of total student workload. Attendance is compulsory for at least 80 per cent of the scheduled hours of single-subject and integrated courses and for seminar activities awarding credits, unless the relevant course description provides otherwise. The 2026 2027 Study Manifesto identifies a number of teaching assignments as still to be confirmed; students should therefore consult the Degree Programme website before the beginning of each semester.

The second-year study plan includes a compulsory traineeship worth 6 ECTS credits. One ECTS credit corresponds to 25 hours of student workload. The traineeship may be undertaken with institutions or companies that have an agreement with the University and is governed by the procedures approved by the Teaching Coordination Committee. The Departmental Traineeship Committee maintains links with employers and supports students in identifying appropriate training opportunities.

Students may apply for international mobility opportunities offered by the University, the Polytechnic and Basic Sciences School and the Department of Architecture. Educational activities completed abroad are recognised subject to an approved Learning Agreement and to the procedures established by the competent programme and departmental bodies. Calls, partner institutions, eligibility requirements and application deadlines must be checked in the current University and Department notices.

Special educational paths
The documentation supplied for this guide does not identify any separate contract-based or advanced special educational path for the 2026 2027 academic year. Any pathway or agreement introduced subsequently will be published on the Degree Programme website.
Customising the study plan
Students choose between the Exhibit Design and Digital Design curricula at the end of the common first year and complete 8 ECTS credits of elective activities over the two-year programme. Any individual choice, request for recognition of previous learning or recognition of eligible extracurricular activities is subject to approval by the Teaching Coordination Committee in accordance with the academic regulations. Recognition is based on the consistency of course content and disciplinary areas with the programme’s educational objectives.
The final examination is worth 6 ECTS credits and consists of the public presentation of an original thesis prepared under the supervision of one or more supervisors. The thesis may concern a product or system, including its prototypical development; strategic, integrated or communication design for indoor or outdoor spaces; digital and interactive devices; or theoretical and historical-critical disciplinary research.
The thesis must be supported by substantial theoretical research and must include a methodological introduction setting out its disciplinary foundations, aims, experimental features and the candidate’s original contribution. Students may be admitted to the final examination only after passing all examinations and acquiring all credits other than the 6 ECTS credits assigned to the thesis. The examination committee assesses both the thesis and the student’s overall academic record; the academic regulations provide for a maximum of five additional points and permit the award of honours by unanimous decision.
Applications must be submitted online through Segrepass under ‘Segreteria Online’. The application windows for 2026 2027 are set out under ‘Graduation dates’ below.

The Degree Programme organises incoming orientation activities in close co-operation with the other programmes and departments of the Polytechnic and Basic Sciences School and with the University. Activities include University and School orientation events, programme presentations, open days, seminars and meetings for prospective students, supported by regularly updated online information. As DBE is a Master’s degree programme, these activities are directed primarily towards students and graduates from eligible first-cycle programmes in Italy and abroad.
University orientation portal: https://www.orientamento.unina.it
Tutoring is organised in co-operation with the Department, School and University. A welcome meeting is normally held before classes begin to introduce students to teaching arrangements, locations, services and contact persons. Lecturers provide office hours and email support. Dedicated meetings assist first-year students in making an informed choice between the Exhibit Design and Digital Design curricula. Additional assistance is available through the University SINAPSI Centre for students with disabilities or specific learning disabilities and for students encountering difficulties during their studies.
