Updated to the academic year 2026/2027
The training program for the graduates in Mechanical Engineering for Energy and the Environment (in italian: Ingegneria Meccanica per l’Energia e l’Ambiente – IMEA) aims at covering a wide range of roles to which the industrial engineer is normally called, in companies producing goods and/or services, engineering companies, design offices, etc., on issues relating to the conversion, accumulation, distribution and final use of energy. The broad spectrum of knowledge acquired during the Master’s course guarantees the IMEA graduate the flexibility necessary to be able to carry out different professional roles, which will see him involved in activities such as the design, simulation, thermo-economic optimization of machines, components and integrated systems of varying complexity. Applications are related to the conversion, distribution, accumulation and final uses of energy in industry, transport or buildings, also through the use of advanced methodologies and technologies, of particular interest for the ongoing energy and ecological transition. Furthermore, the IMEA master’s graduate will be able to play a fundamental role in research and development activities, for example in supporting the design and execution of experimental activities, and will be able to contribute to the verification of compliance with technical regulations in the construction and operation of industrial plants and installations for civil use.
The areas of greatest specialization for IMEA master’s graduates include:
Technical communication skills and mastery of the relevant scientific literature give the graduate the ability to acquire new knowledge and methods during their profession, or to profitably undertake post-graduate training courses (1st and 2nd level Master’s, Research Doctorate). The Degree Course also offers an interdisciplinary training course called Minor in Transition Engineering in Green Technologies. The latter is achieved through an appropriate choice of the study plan, and is certified by a digital certificate called “Open Badge” (https://bestr.it/badge/show/2728).
Professional training is aimed at covering the needs relating to a wide range of roles to which the industrial engineer is normally called in companies producing goods and/or services, in relation to problems of optimizing the production, management and use of energy (mechanical or thermal), in compliance with regulatory and environmental constraints. The graduate in Mechanical Engineering for Energy and the Environment therefore finds employment in:
In this context, graduates of this Course of Studies have access to employment opportunities that extend well beyond regional and national boundaries, without precluding freelance work in the scientific and technical fields.
For enrollment in the Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering for Energy and the Environment, specific access criteria are foreseen regarding the possession of curricular requirements and the mandatory verification of the adequacy of the student’s personal preparation. These criteria are defined in the Teaching Regulations of the Master’s Degree Course and are available on the Course Website, and in particular at the link: http://meccanica.dii.unina.it/it/orientamento-lmea
The IMEA Degree Course establishes four curricular paths of automatic approval, selectable upon presentation of the Study Plan, of which three are taught in Italian and called Innovative Energy Systems, Advanced Energy Management and Propulsion Systems, and a fourth is taught in English and called Sustainable Energy.

Classification of Learning Activities in Automatic Approval Plans:
Minor in “Green Technologies”:
Partly overlapping with the four Automatically Approved Curricular Paths, students enrolled in the Degree Program are offered the opportunity to enroll in the Minor in “Green Technologies.” This Minor is achieved by acquiring 30 credits (15 curricular + 15 extracurricular) through the submission of an Individual Study Plan, subject to the following requirements:
Additional study plan information
a) Additional Language Skills / Further Knowledge, 3 credits:
b) Internship, 9 credits: This can be either extramoenia (at companies, public or private research centers) or intramoenia (at university laboratories).
c) Final Exam, 12 credits: The degree thesis is developed under the responsibility of a program instructor, possibly with the assistance of a company tutor as co-supervisor. To obtain the Minor, students must complete a Final Exam on topics related to ecological transition.
The degree course promotes curricular internship activities that can be both intra-moenia (carried out within university structures) and extra-moenia type, carried out in structures outside the university. The student has a wide selection of agreements with companies and public and private institutions, aimed at carrying out training internships outside the University. The University of Naples Federico II, through the Orientation and Placement Service of the Polytechnic and Basic Sciences School (https://www.jobservice.unina.it) ensures constant contact with the world of work, to offer students and graduates of the University concrete opportunities for internships and stages and to promote their professional integration. A list of internship agreements active at University level is available at the link http://allegati.unina.it/studenti/tirocini/doc/ConvenzioniAttive.pdf. Students consult the list of internship agreements active at University level or internship opportunities reported on the websites of the Professors of the Course and contact the referent persons of the various initiatives. Further internship offers can be agreed by students directly with the professors, in compliance with the procedures illustrated on the degree course website under internships. ALL students, before the start of the internship activities (INTRAMOENIA OR EXTRAMOENIA), must compulsorily follow a training course on safety and health in the workplace. The procedure, which includes online training courses and medical examinations, is described in detail on the degree course website under Safety and Health Surveillance. Details on the procedures for carrying out a curricular internship are reported at the link http://meccanica.dii.unina.it/it/tirocinio-lmea
The Degree Programme provides assistance for carrying out training periods abroad in the Erasmus context. The procedures for participating in the various Erasmus calls are reported at the link: https://www.unina.it/didattica/opportunita-studenti/erasmus/programma
The Study Plan is normally submitted by October 31st of each academic year. Detailed instructions for customizing and submitting the Study Plan are available at the following link: http://meccanica.dii.unina.it/it/piani-di-studio-lmea.
The Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering for Energy and the Environment is obtained after passing a Final Exam, consisting of the evaluation by an academic commission of the master’s degree thesis, developed by the student under the guidance of one or more university supervisors and with the possible correlation of experts also external to the University. The thesis concerns activities of a theoretical, methodological, numerical or experimental nature. Activities carried out in research laboratories outside the university, as well as in Italian and foreign companies and institutions, may contribute to the preparation of the thesis, provided that they are part of a training course led by the university supervisor. Tutors external to the academic teaching staff who have contributed to following the graduating student on specific topics of the developed training course may be invited to the graduation session as co-supervisors, without being part of the Master’s Degree Examination Committee. The written report and discussion may be developed in English and must demonstrate the originality of the work carried out, the mastery of the topics covered, the maturity acquired, the ability to operate independently and a good level of communication skills, including the effective use of IT instruments. The Final Exam consists of the presentation of the work carried out under the guidance of a Supervisor and the subsequent discussion with the members of the Commission.
The candidate is allowed to make use of an audio-visual support, to be screened publicly, or, alternatively, to draw up a summary booklet, to be delivered in copy to each member of the Commission.
At the end of the presentation, each teacher can address observations and questions to the candidate, related to the topic of the thesis work. The presentation usually lasts 15 minutes.
The future student can gather information by interacting directly with university staff delegated to orientation, in online and face-to-face events, which take place during the year.
The calendar of individual events is available on the University website at the www.orientamento.unina.it portal, which is also reported on the website (orientation section) of the Polytechnic and Basic Sciences School (SPSB), www.scuolapsb.unina.it.
In particular, the Degree Programme organizes various orientation initiatives coordinated at Departmental, School and University level.
Every year the Magistrali@SPSB event is organized in which the educational offer of master’s degrees, professional opportunities and opportunities for theses and internships are shown. Youtube recordings of these events can also be found later through the SPSB website reported in the previous sections.
In the period March-July, the “Open Days” events are organized to visit the facilities in person or attend specific events. The dates of these events are provided during the Magistrali@SPSB event and how to participate can be found on the website of the Department of Industrial Engineering (www.dii.unina.it).
The Degree Programme organizes ongoing orientation initiatives, in close coordination with the other courses of study of the Department and in collaboration with the Polytechnic and Basic Sciences School. These initiatives aim to facilitate the student in defining a study plan appropriate to his or her inclinations, providing detailed information on the knowledge and skills related to each course.
The Degree Programme organizes outgoing orientation activities in a coordinated manner with the Department, the SPSB and the University. A http://www.orientamento.unina.it/list of opportunities for extra-curricular internships (i.e. postgraduate) and job offers is available on the www.orientamento.unina.it website. In addition, the SPSB operates a dynamic job placement platform, at www.jobservice.unina.it. The platform is aimed at students and companies to facilitate the meeting between the supply and demand of curricular internships (pre-graduate), extra-curricular internships (post-graduate) and work. In order to reduce placement times and make the career choice more conscious, in the spring, the Degree Course contributes to the SPSB “Career Day@SPSB” event, generally in presence. During this event, students and recent graduates have the opportunity to learn in person about the production domains of individual companies and the job profiles offered. In addition, the presentation of professional opportunities and job and research opportunities is also promoted through thematic seminars, organized by the Degree Course during the year. Finally, specific training events for soft-skills (e.g. communication and relational skills and competences, preparation for job placement) are organized periodically.
Enrolment at 1st and subsequent years usually take place from September, 1st to October 31st of each year, in accordance with procedures that are announced in a specific Guide to enrolment and payment of fees published at the URL:
