The University of Naples Federico II, which has been engaged in the tourism sector for years through the research and teaching activities of a specialized faculty, has launched an experimental Bachelor’s Degree program with a professional orientation in Hospitality Management. This program aims to create specialized professionals in the hospitality sector, focusing on the main areas of activity within hospitality businesses. The term “Hospitality Management” is particularly useful for the Diploma Supplement issued by the University, as it identifies a clearly defined profession at the international level. The course is developed in collaboration with companies that significantly represent the tourism hospitality sector in the Campania region, as well as nationally and internationally. These companies have shown concrete interest in participating in the initiative, not only for internships and placements but also for on-the-job training activities managed together with the University. This aspect represents an undeniable strength of the program, as the interaction with companies spans all stages of its implementation.
The Hospitality Management course aims to train specialists in the culture of hospitality, with a particular focus on Hotel Management and Food and Beverage Management in the hotel sector. It should be noted that the use of foreign language terms is necessary as they have been universally adopted by all hospitality businesses in the international landscape. Within a broad-based education, students can specialize in areas such as “Hotel Management” and “Food & Beverage in hospitality businesses” through elective subjects and internship/placement activities.
The course provides knowledge and skills in the management of hospitality businesses, enabling graduates to aspire to middle-management positions with functional and operational roles in various areas of business management in the hospitality sector, including cruise companies and event and conference businesses
The Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management is professional and prepares students for the professions of middle-manager, taking care of aspects related to the effectiveness of business strategies, the definition and implementation of pricing policies, online and offline distribution, front office management, customer relations as well as event planning and organization of all catering services in compliance with quality and cost standards.
The course is also aimed at young entrepreneurs or aspiring entrepreneurs, who intend to run a business in the sector. The main business macro areas of the course are: Hotel Management and F&B Management. With regard to the area of Hotel Management, students will be able to strengthen their skills and spend professionally in different areas, including: Resident Manager, Room Division, Guest Relation, Revenue management. With reference to F&B management, the professional outlets cover the following areas: Room Management, Restaurant Management, administration and control of F&B area.
The course has a programmed number of students, in accordance with the provisions of Law 2 August 1999, n.264, with access regulated by a selective procedure, aimed at assessing the aptitude of the student to undertake the chosen studies and the state of basic knowledge required. For access is required the possession of a certificate of High School or other qualification obtained abroad and recognized as equivalent.
Starting from the academic year 2024/2025, the number of available places for the Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management is defined as follows: 60 places reserved for EU students and 5 places reserved for non-EU students.
In compliance with the university’s regulations, students are admitted to the Bachelor’s Degree based on their diploma grades and an admission test, which includes an assessment of their foreign language proficiency.
The admission test will consist of an oral exam. The interview will cover general cultural topics with particular reference to general knowledge of the tourism sector, and it will assess the candidates’ level of motivation regarding the field of study. A level of English proficiency corresponding to at least B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is also required.
In the overall evaluation for the final ranking, the selection committee has a total of 100 points at its disposal, with 50 points for the oral exam and 50 points awarded based on the grade obtained in the High School Diploma examination.

The specific educational objectives are tailored to the profile intended to be formed, namely the middle manager in hotel management or food and beverage management in the hospitality industry.

Study Plan Notes
To achieve these specific objectives, all graduates in Hospitality Management must acquire knowledge and skills in the following areas of learning:
– Basic Education Area: Hotel Management and F&B Management, in which hospitality facilities are treated for their possible applications to the HM industry and are functional to the characterizing, related and integrative subjects. In addition, an adequate number of CFU is foreseen in the areas of business economics, private law, tourism and agri-food, quantitative methods, tourism economics, environmental valorization processes, and sustainable tourism.
– Area of characterizing training: it allows the acquisition of specific knowledge, also in foreign languages, of traditional management and marketing of the hotel business, performance management systems, statistics, information technology and social media data analysis, commercial law and navigation, strategic management and innovation, tourism and transport policy, business planning, human resources management and team building, territorial valorization, gastronomic culture and ethical food.
– Area of related and complementary disciplines: this area concerns both disciplines related to gastronomic culture and business. There will be courses aimed at promoting specialization in hotel management and food & beverage respectively.
Curricular internship activities
The course includes two curricular internships: in the second year (20 CFU) and in the third year for (30 CFU). In fact, after the construction of a theoretical base in the first year, the curriculum provides for greater specialization in the second year through a first phase of internship, while in the third year the classroom training activities will be more contained, given the higher number of credits dedicated to the internship, with a specific training with respect to the profiles identified. These training activities are essential in view of the professionalizing nature of the Degree. The internship is an experience that allows students to come into contact with the business reality and the world of work, creating synergies between the theoretical preparation provided in the classroom and the operational one developed during the on-the-job training.
This experience has a formative purpose, aimed at testing the knowledge acquired and developing new skills. The internships are held in the second semester and can be carried out in Italy or abroad at different types of companies operating in sectors related to the educational objectives of the course. As these are curricular internships, there is no remuneration for the work done. However, it is suggested to the partners of the course in Hospitality Management the recognition of some facilities (reimbursement of expenses / accommodation / food). In order to assess the existence of the requirements of consistency with the academic course, the training projects developed for the activation of the internship are subject to the approval of the university tutor, who is a teacher related to the course of study.

Activities for the preparation and development of the final test
The final exam verifies the student’s ability to carry out an autonomous and methodologically rigorous learning process. The activities carried out in order to pass the final exam consist in the realization of a study on a topic of interest coherent with the formative contents of the Degree Course. The study consists of an in-depth bibliographical study on a subject related to the course of study and its presentation and discussion before the Degree Committee. The topic chosen for the preparation of the paper is agreed upon with the lecturer, it must contain the most recent acquisitions on the chosen topic and must highlight the student’s synthesis and communication skills. The paper can be written in Italian or in English. Deadlines vary according to the teaching calendar. Therefore, the student is encouraged to consult the Graduate Sessions section of the Department of Economics, Management, Institutions website to check the approved deadlines in the current academic year: https://www.demi.unina.it/didattica/calendario-degli-esami
Incoming orientation
For the incoming orientation, the School Board has established an effective collaboration with the Regional School Department. In fact, this is a strategic activity for the Bachelor’s Degree, which is articulated in different moments. the Department of ‘Economics, Management, Institutions’ (DEMI) organizes every year the Open Day, to present to the students of the fifth year of the schools the Courses of Study and the relative access modalities. secondly, meetings are organized at the headquarters of the high schools or also through online links, where the course, the objectives, the study plan, the outgoing profiles and the access modalities are illustrated.
Participation in lessons of the course is another important moment and is carried out on-demand (through online platforms already used by students such as, for example, google classroom) both to students of high schools and to individuals who request it. Finally, the DEMI offers an integrated path of School-Work Alternation and PON Plans, with the aim of enriching the knowledge of students in high schools for students who choose the path dedicated to the tourism sector and can acquire technical skills and transversal. The incoming orientation is aimed at high school students at national and international level and graduates who wish to deepen the hospitality industry.
Meeting moments realized and in progress are represented by online counters for individual students through the platform Micorsoft Teams, request for information through the Facebook and Instragram pages and the dedicated form ‘Request Information’ on the website (https://www.hospitalitymanagement.unina.it/iscrizione/).
In addition, the Department website also has a section dedicated to orientation.
